Practical Courses and Seminars

Bachelor-Basics Internship Power Engineering

The most important electrical equipment explained in the lecture “Basics of Electrical Power Engineering” is examined by the students in person during the lab “Basics of Electrical Power Engineering”. A total of six tests is available: i.e. shunt-wound DC machine, asynchronous machine, synchronous machine, transformer, silicium rectifier in single-phase bridge connection and balancing of single-phase loads in a three-phase net. Each trainee takes part in four selected of the six tests , whereby at least one machine test must be passed. The training imparts not only intensive experiences in handling electrical equipment but also with measuring devices and operation of a complex power-electronic test setup. Direct experiences can therefore be made with electrical energy and its application.

Master Internship Power Electronics and Power Systems Technology

In 8 test series, the students get practical experiences in the fields of power electronics and power systems technology (small groups with 3 to 4 participants). The lab is composed of four parts, the respective content of which is adjusted to the prevailing state of the art of the technology. The first part involves tests with line-commutated converters, where e.g. direct voltages or currents are provided from alternating voltages of the energy supply net for the operation of a DC machine The second part deals with the conversion of direct voltages by means of boost or step-down converters, for this purpose self-commutated converters are used. In the third part, the operation of induction machines with a self-commutated three-phase converter is examined. The fourth part discusses questions from the field of power system technology. For example, properties of wind power systems are examined by a model, which – controlled by power converters - supply the net with energy. The lab improves knowledge about power-electronic components and particularly important electrical machines. Another focus is aimed at improving practical experiences in taking measurements at power-electronic equipment which poses a big challenge. Furthermore, the students gather practical experiences in the start-up and parametrisation of control systems for power electronic systems. The advanced seminar “Power electronics and power system technology” is closely connected to the subjects of the lab. This way, didactic synergy effects between advanced lectures, lab and seminar can be utilized.

Internship for renewable electric power engineering

The practical course consists of seven experiments which deal with photovoltaics, wind energy conversion (two experiments), energy management of decentralized energy systems as well as power electronics for grid integration of renewable energy resources (three experiments). Besides working on test benches, the plants of the decentralized energy supply will be projected, analysed and optimized, with help of the simulation tool anesys. Another wide-spread simulation tool used within this course is Matlab Simulink for dynamic modelling and simulation of power electronics systems including their control software.

Internship for wind power

As part of the internship for electric power engineering and power mechatronics, there will be an internship for renewable wind power.

Bachelor-Specialisation Seminar Electronics

In this seminar, recent topics from the entire field of electronics are being processed. Two parallel workshops, each with different key subjects, will be offered. The key subjects are fixed (rotating two out of five) by the two respective mentor areas of the sub-areas (1) Electronic Materials / nanoelectronics / optoelectronics, (2) electronic circuits, (3) integrated systems, (4) Power Electronics and (5) plasma technology . Examples of topics include technology, microelectronics or Basic amplifier circuits

Master Seminar Power Electronics and Power Systems Technology

Selected subjects of power electronics and power system technology are worked out independently by the students and prepared for the presentation by a paper. The spectrum of subjects includes: line-commutated converters, self-commutated converters, the DC machine and its control, induction machine and its control as well as e.g. photovoltaic, wind energy converters or energy management in the field of power systems technology. The seminar is closely related to the advanced lectures of the Institute for Electrical Power Engineering and Power Electronics and Power Systems Technology and Mechatronics as well as to the advanced lab “Power electronics and power systems technology”. This allows to make use of didactic synergy effects between lecture contents, lab and detailed individual presentation in the seminar.

Open Master-Seminar Electric Power Engineering

Depicted subjects of electrical power engineering, mainly related to research areas of the Institute for electrical power engineering and power electronics and power system engineering and power mechatronics are individually prepared by the students. The spectrum of possible subjects covers the entire electrical power engineering field and ranges from the generation of electrical energy via transmission and distribution up to the application with all aspects of power electronics and power system technology and mechatronics. Further subjects may be ones imparted by associate lecturers in elective compulsory subjects. Students work out challenging subject independently and self-depending – which are generally related to current research projects - by using technical and scientific literature and supported by a supervising research assistant.
